SITE WORK INSTRUCTIONS SURFACE CONSIDERATIONS New Concrete / Brick / Block Wall: Before rendering / plastering / tiling allow walls to dry out by exposure to air for at least 2 weeks. New Cement / Sand Rendering: Before commencing tiling, allow new rendering to dry out by exposure to air for at least 2 weeks (4 weeks for swimming pools) New Concrete Bases: Before commencing tiling ensure that bases have been allowed to dry out by exposure to air for at least 6 weeks. Existing Concrete / Screed Bases: Cut out all loose or hollow portions and make good with a 1:3 cement : sand mortar applied over a slurry bonding coat*. Carefully remove any soft or unsound residues of existing adhesive without damaging the bases. Ensure remaining adhesive residue is sound and firmly bonded to the base. Ceramic / Vitrified & Fully Vitrified Tile / Terrazzo / Hard Natural Stone Bases: Check that existing finish is firmly adhering to the base. Remove any loose or hollow sounding areas and make good with a 1:3 cement : sand mortar applied over a slurry bonding coat*. *Slurry bonding coat is prepared by mixing 2 parts by weight of portland cement to 1 part of ARDEX ENDURA ADMIX AD1. Brush on the base immediately before applying mortar. New Gypsum Plaster: Before commencing tiling, ensure that the plaster has been allowed to dry out by exposure to air for at least 4 weeks. Ensure that the finish coat has been applied and the plaster is free from dust, efflorescence and friable material. Cut any defective areas, including badly cracked plaster, to straight horizontal and vertical edges. Thoroughly dry brush background and edges and make good with plaster or suitable non-shrinking filler. Plaster having a shiny, polished surface should be thoroughly brushed with a stiffed bristled brush, followed by priming with a 1.5 : 1 (cement: ARDEX ENDURA ADMIX AD1). Do not allow primer to dry. Plaster: Tiling must only be carried out onto a plaster finish coat. Leave new plaster for at least 4 weeks to develop sufficient strength to support the weight of tiling. Remove dusty or friable layers and replace old or decaying plaster. Gypsum Plasterboard Backgrounds: Ensure that boards are dry, securely fixed and rigid with no protruding fixings and the face intended to receive the decorative finish is exposed. Plywood / Chipboard / Fibre-reinforced Cement Sheets: Sheets / boards must be dry, securely fixed and rigid, e.g. screwed to a seasoned timber frame at 300 mm centres vertically and horizontally. Moisture resistant or exterior grade boards should be used. Seal the reverse side and edges with ARDEX ENDURA ADMIX AD1 to prevent distortion from atmospheric changes. Do not seal or prime surfaces to be tiled. Check suitability of sheets / boards for the intended application with the manufacturer. Fibre Mesh Reinforced Cement Faced Tile Backer Boards: Ensure that the boards are dry. Do not seal or prime surfaces to be tiled. Glazed Tiles / Bricks: Ensure those existing tiles / bricks are firmly adhere to their bed and the bed is sufficiently strong to support the weight of new tiling. Remove loose or hollow surrounding areas and make good with a 1 : 3 cement : sand mortar applied over a slurry bonding coat (2 parts cement : 1 part ARDEX ENDURA ADMIX AD1) or with a suitable non - shrinking filler. Painted Walls: Ensure that the paint is in a sound condition. Check by applying strips of sellotape (or equivalent) to clean dry paints / surfaces. Leave for 10 minutes before tearing them off. If paint is removed with the tape then the paint is unsound. Remove all areas of unsound paint by mechanical means. Do not use paint strippers. Steel Background: Ensure that the surfaces are : - Firm, rigid and free from deflection. - Free from loose rust, scale and grease. Wherever necessary, treat with a suitable rust inhibiting primer. of application. Mix thoroughly until a slump-free mortar is obtained. A 20 kg bag will require approximately 5 - 5.5 litres of water. The adhesive is immediately ready-for-use and has a pot-life of 1.5 hours at 27 ± 1°C. No further water should be added. APPLICATIONS 1. Spread not more than 1 sq.m. at a time, apply the adhesive to the wall or floor surface. 2. Comb the adhesive to the required depth (between 3-6mm) using a suitable trowel. 3. Press the tiles firmly into position with a slight twisting action, checking periodically that good contact is maintained with the back of each tile. Leave no voids behind tiles when solid-bed fixing. 4. Tiles should be fixed within 10 minutes of adhesive being applied, depending on the porosity of the surface and atmospheric conditions. Tiles can be adjusted up to 5 minutes after fixing. Touch the adhesive ribs periodically and if a skin has formed, remove the adhesive and apply a new layer. 5. Leave adequate joints between individual wall and floor tiles unless self spacing tiles are used. 6. Clean off surplus adhesive from the tile face and between joints. 7. Do not use in damp conditions. Grouting should not be carried out for at least 24 hours. Use the appropriate grouting material from the range of cementitious and epoxy grouts. NOTE: The addition of ARDEX ENDURA ADMIX GT1 to cement-based grouts will enhance adhesion to tile edges, reduce water permeability and imparts flexibility.
